Painting with Light
This image is Kamil Varga's “Paths of Light” created in 1983, and is one of his first photographs using the technique of painting with light. I feel like the title of the photograph makes the viewer more likely to follow the 'paths' created by the photographer since it makes them more of the subject. This may not be how Varga intended for it to be seen, however no parts of the image have been heavily distorted - other than the manipulation of light. Since the photograph is black and white, it effect the overall feeling. lack of colour is often associated with unease, discomfort or unhappiness however, the contrast of the bright white and dark corners of this image make it seem more lively. Vagra's placement of everyday objects on the table (apples, candles...) furthers dismisses the unease of the image. I think that these objects have not been placed so for any real purpose, they are just a display of normal life; many table tops would have apples on them. This gives it a contrast with the abnormality of having the moving light in between the items.
Here are my own attempts at painting with light; using a studio set up and torches to create light illusions. In order to create these images, a slow shutter speed, wide aperture and high ISO needed to be used - to let in enough light as well as giving the desired effect.
