Geometric
Lynette Miller
This image is called 'Circular Paradox', created by Lynette Miller. The image has clearly been manipulate in Photoshop to create the geometric shapes and give it this effect. Part of the photograph have been taken away, only the parts in the shapes remain. The horizon in a photograph is usual on a third, however Lynette has placed it in the middle of the image. This gives it more presence.
The title of the photograph represents the image since 'Paradox' means that something is the same but slightly different. The way the image has been edited makes us see it in a different way i.e. pieces are missing and some of the shapes are on their side. |
Jelle Martens
Jelle Martens' image from the 'Quivering Forest' collection. He is Belgium artist known for his use of geometric shapes in images.
This image has been Photoshoped to create shapes in all of the image; cubes and triangles. This use of geometric shapes splits up the images in different section. Some shots of the images join up, others do not. The use of calming neutral colours links to the theme of nature in the shots. It also blends with some of the shots of the water and sky, almost blending in with the rest of the image. Yet the blue is also bold and bright, making the different sections and shapes stand out from one another.

My Idea
For my initial idea I will take inspiration from Jelle Marten's work as I think it interesting and creative. I plan to manipulate and image (or several of a similar theme) using shapes and colour to develop an interesting image.
Experimenting
Here are my first experiments with created using Photoshop. For these, I took the idea of geometric shapes (rectangles and squares) as well as editing the colours to give layered effects. I would like to now try similar techniques on different subjects and to improve, perhaps adding in more symmetry and trying different patterns.
Second Experiment
For my second experiment I again used Photoshop to edit my original image. Taking inspiration from Jelle Marten's work, in using shape and colour to alter the image. Doing the gives an interesting effect as the contrast of colours and patterns it creates is rather eye catching. In this edit, I have created a check board effect, which is neater than the first attempt. Using the hue/saturation tool, I was able to alter the colour of one of the layers to show the pattern. Although the colours I have used have little contrast, the paler blue tone of the second layer stands out against the original, without being too bold. In another edit, I would like to use different shapes in the edit of my images, and try using bold or more than one colour.
For this edit I took inspiration from my previous experiments, in that it is a portrait. Photoshop was used to edit the image and give the desired effect. Using the saturation adjustment tool, I was able to change the colour of the image in a pattern with alternate colours. This gives a distorted affect to the features of her face as they are not inline.
